Idea | Start a tradition
I’ve heard it said, “Be the first to start a tradition and the last to break one.” Our modern culture doesn’t think too highly of traditions - too often passing them off as hokey or useless. Traditions, like anything, can be good or bad. Yet, in the absence of tradition, we, as a culture, gravitate towards the easy, convenient, and passive to fill the void (e.g., Christmas caroling becomes watching another Christmas movie).
One of my family’s newer traditions is to prep a French Toast Bake on Christmas Eve to have on Christmas morning (click here for the recipe from my Notion). We’ve done it for two years now and we plan on doing it again this year. Maybe you want to do something different. The key is to start it up!
Book | “The Power of Now”
“The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle has been referenced by many, stating how it changed their whole outlook on life. I’ve known about it for years but never thought it would have any real impact on my life; thought it was a bunch of platitudes that seem deep but are generalities. Stuff like, “This moment is precious.” However, after experiencing it, I stand corrected. It really is a great book! You may not agree with everything he has to say, but he makes a great case for the power of consciously being present.
Quick note: I listened to the audiobook but I don’t recommend it due to its monotone narration.
Video | “Champions”
This trailer hit close to home for me since Bash has Down Syndrome. Pretty much everyone knows of someone in their life with special needs. What’s great about this trailer (without having seen the movie) is that it speaks to the idea that, no matter where we are in life, we can not only improve but be excellent. Don’t count yourself out… count yourself in!
Self-Care | Giving Tree
It’s a simple concept yet it has a deeply emotional impact. The Giving Tree at our church (University United Methodist Church) benefits children in the foster care system. These kids are away from their parents. I can’t imagine how tough that would be at any time, let alone during the holidays. A gift doesn’t fix things, but it may ease their difficult situation.
You may not be able to house a foster child. Admittedly, we’re not able to at that point. Yet anyone can give a gift. If more people can participate, more kids get much-needed attention. If you haven’t already participated, try it. You’ll find that it lifts your spirits. And if you have participated, kudos to you!
