Hello, fellow Oddballer!
In this edition of “Oddballs,” we have people doing amazingly odd yet cool stuff! And then there’s me; not as amazing or cool, yet odd nonetheless.
As always, links are in bold and underlined. Have fun with those. So, without further ado, here are five oddballs for your eyeballs!
Down and Out? Not today!
A person can be odd in extraordinary ways; outliers, as Malcolm Gladwell might say. Heather Kampf (née Dorniden) is one such outlier oddball. In a 600m race (three 200m laps), she was tripped up and took a nasty spill ON THE LAST LAP, knocking her out of first place. The rest of the competitors passed her by or ran over her. What happened next was nothing short of amazing. She not only got up and continued running, but she also turned on the afterburners and surpassed everyone to win! Watch the insane video here.
He Killed It!
It takes a certain type of weirdo to dress up like Michael Myers and stroll around a mall. It takes an even weirder type of weirdo to play piano in the get-up. Click here to see this weird weirdo do this thing. Totally worth watching!
Nine Feet and Thousands of Toothpicks
Scott Weaver, grocery store clerk, spent 37 years creating his 9’ tribute to San Francisco called “Rolling Through the Bay”… out of toothpicks! Why does it matter that he’s a grocery store clerk? Well, one would think that a structure of this magnitude would have been created by a full-time artist. Nope! This dude did this - among other structures - in his spare time. What an amazing oddball!
You Can’t Beat This!
Wilco may have their “Heavy Metal Drummer,” but percussionist Joe Porter is taking a goofier route. In his videos, he’ll play things like commercial jingles or the Nokia ringtone on a variety of percussion instruments. Odd people have odd passions. Odd percussionists have odd percussion passions. Beat that!
Oddballs #9: “Flaco the Skeleton”
Since my zine “Oddballs” is, in itself, a bit of an oddity, I thought I’d share something from this month’s issue. Enjoy dem bones!
