Hello! Odd to see you! :)
Halloween is just around the corner, waiting to jump out and scare the wits out of you. In the spirit of Halloween (see what I did there?), I’m bringing you some personal insights into scary movies. I’d love to hear your own stories, scary or otherwise!

“Do you like scary movies?”
Before meeting Jessica, I never watched scary movies. Now, we watch them every year around Halloween. I’ve grown to enjoy the odd craftmanship of horror moviemaking. We especially like the campy films like “Scream,” “Thanksgiving,” and “Friday the 13th (Part I).” One time when we watched every “Scream” movie back to back. It took us about a week or two, but it was a ton of fun!
The fact that horror is its own genre is odd to me. What’s even odder is that there are so many subgenres. Here are just a few:
Slasher
Paranormal
Apocalyptic and Post-Apocalyptic
Psychological
Zombie
Monster
Gore
Comedic
Vampire
Body
Cosmic
Witchcraft
There are even more. That fact alone is a bit of disturbing horror in and of itself!
The Cut-Off
There are those (like my stepdaughter) who can stomach every genre and view them as cinematic creations; critiquing their qualities on the genre. Me and Jessica? We’re lightweights. We have a threshold that we don’t cross. If the movie has any of the following, we turn it off:
Kids getting hurt or worse
Torture
Sacrilege
Disgusting (think “The Human Centipede”)
Raunchy
Additionally, I avoid anything that has to do with witchcraft. I’ve never seen “Hocus Pocus” and I doubt I ever will. The closest I get is listening to Fleetwood Mac every now and then as I’m not 100% convinced that the “Stevie Nicks is a witch” rumor has any truth to it.
What’s weird is that, when I was younger, I would watch scarier stuff. For instance, I tried to watch “Child’s Play” again as an adult and I turned it off. Now that I have a son who likes cartoons and toys, it hits too close to home. I’m more scared as an adult than as a kid. Crazy!
The Final Cut
How do you feel about horror movies? Do you too have a threshold and, if so, where do you draw the line? I honestly would like to know.
At the same time, now that you know where my threshold is, do you have any recommendations? As long as it’s not one of the ones below, I’m good.
